Basketball Facts and Trivia

• James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor who invented Basketball in December 1891, in Springfield Massachusetts.
• The first basketball "hoops" were peach baskets with the bottom intact. Officials had to get the ball out after each basket.
• The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts in 11 March 1892.
• The first professional league was founded in 1898 and the first champions were: Trenton Nationals, New York Wanderers, Bristol Pile Drivers and Camden Electrics.
• First string nets were used in the early 1900s.
• The game officially became an Olympic event at the Summer Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936.
• The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded in 6 June 1946.
• After the 1948-1949 season, Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged with National Basketball League (NBL) and become what we call today National Basketball Association (NBA).
• The Original Celtics were Considered as the "Fathers of Basketball"; strongest and most successful team from 1922-1928.
